Our Ear Health Assessment provides a clear and accurate diagnosis using advanced video-otoscopy, helping you understand exactly what is happening inside your ears.

Whether you’re experiencing hearing changes, ear pain, muffled sound, dizziness or simply want peace of mind, a professional assessment ensures you receive the right treatment, not guesswork.

The Technique

What Is an Ear Health Assessment?

An ear health assessment is a detailed examination of your ear canal and eardrum using a high-definition video otoscope.
This allows your clinician to see the entire ear canal clearly and identify:

  • Wax build-up
  • Eardrum problems
  • Infection or inflammation
  • Blockages not caused by wax
  • Foreign bodies
  • Skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis)
  • Fluid or congestion
  • Impact from hearing aids or earphones

An Ear Health Assessment is ideal if you have:

  • Blocked or muffled hearing
  • Ear pain or discomfort
  • Itching or irritation
  • History of ear problems
  • Sudden hearing changes
  • Dizziness or balance issues
  • Hearing aids causing problems
  • Concerns about perforation or infection

Unlike a simple GP check, video otoscopy provides a magnified, well-lit, real-time view, allowing us to diagnose issues accurately and safely.

Do I Need Ear Drops Before My Ear Health Assessment?

For an ear health assessment, ear drops are not always needed. If you suspect wax build-up, using olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops for 2–3 days can help soften wax for a clearer examination.
If you're unsure whether wax is the cause, it's fine to attend without using drops - we’ll assess and advise you on the day.

Recommended

If you suspect wax or mild blockage: use olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops for 2–3 days before your appointment to soften wax and improve visibility.

No drops

If you have a perforation, infection or sensitivity to oil.

If you're unsure whether your symptoms are wax-related, simply book the assessment without using any drops. We’ll examine your ears with a high-definition otoscope and advise you on the safest next steps.

How Often Should You Have an Ear Check?

It depends on your symptoms and ear history:

  • People prone to wax build-up: every 3–6 months
  • Hearing aid users: every 3 months
  • Anyone with persistent itching or eczema: every 6–12 months

FAQs

Questions and Answers

No. A professional ear health assessment is completely painless. The video otoscope gently sits at the entrance of your ear canal—there is no insertion, no pressure, and no discomfort. The process is quick and safe for adults and children.

Yes. Using a high-definition video otoscope, we can show you clear, real-time images of your ear canal and eardrum on a screen. This helps you understand exactly what is happening and why certain treatment is recommended.

A full ear assessment appointment takes around 20–30 minutes, including the ear examination, explanation of findings, and personalised aftercare advice.

Yes. Even if you’re confident it’s earwax, an ear examination is essential to confirm this. Many symptoms mimic wax buildup (e.g., infection, inflammation, fluid). The assessment ensures wax removal is safe and suitable for you.

If we identify infection, eardrum issues, inflammation, eczema, or foreign bodies, we will explain our findings and advise whether you should see your GP or an ENT specialist. Early diagnosis prevents problems from becoming more serious.

Not always. If we suspect wax, 2–3 days of olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops can help soften it, but drops are not required for most assessments. If you're unsure, attending without drops is perfectly fine.

You may benefit from an assessment if you have:

  • Blocked or muffled ears
  • Itching or irritation
  • Sudden hearing changes
  • Pain or pressure
  • Tinnitus or buzzing
  • Discomfort from hearing aids or earphones
  • Recurrent infections
  • No improvement after ear drops

Absolutely. Hearing aid providers often require a clear ear canal before testing. Wax or inflammation can distort test results or interfere with hearing aid moulds and fittings.

We currently offer ear health assessments for individuals aged 16 and over. For younger children, we recommend seeing your GP or a paediatric ENT specialist, as their ear anatomy and medical needs require specialist care.

Yes. The assessment is safe, non-invasive, and helps us evaluate the condition of your ear. If you have a perforation, we will explain the safest treatment options and what to avoid.

We can identify physical causes of tinnitus or hearing loss, such as wax, infection, inflammation, eardrum problems, or canal narrowing. If the cause is not related to the ear canal, we will recommend appropriate next steps, such as audiology testing.

Yes. If your symptoms are not caused by earwax, we will explain what is happening and avoid unnecessary treatment. Sometimes the best course is no wax removal, and we will guide you accordingly.

At the end of your ear health assessment, you’ll receive:

  • A clear explanation of your findings
  • Images of your ear canal (if applicable)
  • Recommended next steps
  • Advice on drops, hygiene, or treatment
  • A referral suggestion if medical care is needed

Our goal is to help you understand your ears and keep them healthy long-term.
